Ride your way: A step-by-step guide to planning your cycling challenge

Are you ready for your next cycling challenge? Now’s your chance to turn your miles into lifesaving impact. Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or dusting off your bike for the first time in a while, taking on a cycling challenge for Prostate Cancer UK means so much more than just crossing the finish line.

By planning your own bike ride, you'll be helping to fund lifesaving research and support for men who are affected by the most common cancer in England. Every mile you ride can make a real difference.

Here’s how to plan your own unforgettable cycling challenge - your route, your way.

Step 1: Choose your challenge

You can make your ride every bit as unique as your reasons for doing it. Whether you're cycling in support of a loved one, to remember someone close to you, or simply because you want to make a difference, choose a challenge that feels meaningful to you.

Need some inspiration? Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Test yourself with an epic 100-mile solo ride

  • Take on a team challenge with mates, cycling across the countryside

  • Work towards a month-long cycling goal by commuting to work or riding daily

  • Complete a coast-to-coast weekend adventure or a family-friendly local loop that’s fun for everyone.

The beauty of this challenge is its flexibility. You decide the distance, the location and the pace. It could be a one-day ride or a long-distance journey over several weeks. It’s your challenge, your choice.

Step 2: Pick your route

From scenic trails to tough terrains, the UK is packed with brilliant riding routes for all abilities. Choose one that excites you, suits your fitness level and works around your calendar.

Dream big! Will you take on mountainous terrain, a beautiful coastal ride or keep it local? Here are a few popular cycling spots to consider:

  • Camel Trail, Cornwall. A flat and family-friendly ride for all abilities.

  • London to Brighton. An iconic route with great amenities along the way.

  • Lake District loops. A stunning cycle with serious climbs and incredible views.

  • Richmond Park, London. A classic city-based cycling escape.

  • Your local area. Sometimes the best rides are right on your doorstep!

Plan your route using tools like Strava, Komoot or Ride with GPS. And don’t forget to check road safety, elevation and facilities like water stops along the way.

Step 3: Set your fundraising goal

Once you’ve got your challenge in mind, it’s time to register your ride and set your fundraising target. Whether you're aiming for £200 or £2,000, the funds you raise will help support lifesaving research, early diagnosis, and vital support services for men and their families.

Here are a few top fundraising tips:

  • Share your story with friends and family. People you know will be inspired to donate once they see what's motivating you to get on your bike.

  • Set yourself mini milestones. Not only will this help to spur you on, it'll also keep the people who are supporting you excited about your challenge.

  • Ask your employer if they'll match-fund what you raise. This could help you double your impact straight away.

  • Use social media to track your journey. Posting updates on Facebook, Instagram and other platforms is a great way to thank your supporters.

And don't forget. We’ll support you with lots more fundraising tips, resources and digital tools to help you hit your target!

Step 4: Get ready to ride

Your challenge is as much about preparation as it is about performance. Give yourself enough time to train, especially if you're tackling longer distances. If you haven't cycled in a while, there's no need to train like a pro - just build up gradually and listen to your body.

Here a few important things to consider:

  • Build your training plan. Gradually increase your distance and the time you spend on the bike.

  • Tick off your kit checklist. Don't start cycling without a helmet, water bottle, padded shorts and puncture repair kit.

  • Think about nutrition. Stay fuelled and hydrated with snacks and plenty of drinks.

  • Remember to rest. Factor in time to recover, especially if you're cycling across several days.

You don't need to be a pro - just make sure you're committed to the cause and ready to put in the miles.

Step 5: Make it count

This is your moment - so make it memorable. Throughout your cycling challenge, don't forget to:

  • share your journey on social media to inspire others

  • add photos, updates, or a short blog to your JustGiving page

  • mention if you’re riding in tribute to someone close to you, or to raise awareness for the 1 in 8 men affected by prostate cancer

  • celebrate your success - crossing that finish line, however you define it, is a huge achievement!

You’ll also be helping to spark conversations and raise awareness about a disease that often goes undetected until it’s too late. One man dies every 45 minutes from prostate cancer - but together, we can change that.

Now it's time to ride!

It’s time to turn your passion into action. Start organising your own cycling challenge today, and ride for a future where no man dies from prostate cancer.
