Black Men's One-to-One Support Service
Being told you have prostate cancer can be life changing. It can leave you with questions, worries, and emotions that are hard to share and sometimes, it helps to talk to someone who’s been through it.
The Black Men’s One-to-One Support Service was created with Black men for Black men affected by prostate cancer. It is a free, confidential telephone service that connects you to someone who truly understands what you’re going through. Someone who shares similar experiences and background, and who knows what this journey can feel like physically, emotionally, and culturally.
You’ll be matched with a trained Black volunteer who’s lived with prostate cancer themselves. They’re here to listen, share their story, and help you feel confident, supported, and reassured that you don’t have to navigate prostate cancer alone.
How it works
- Register your interest by filling out a short form. Alternatively, call 0800 448 0745 to request Black Men’s One-to-One Support.
- We’ll contact you to understand your needs and match you with a suitable volunteer.
- You’ll receive a call from your matched volunteer within a few days.
- If you’re happy with your match, organise up to three additional calls, at a time that works for you both.
What you can talk about
Our volunteers are here to listen, support, and share their experiences with you, whether you’re newly diagnosed, receiving treatment or living with prostate cancer. You might talk about:
- Understanding your diagnosis and treatment options
- Coping with side effects like incontinence or erectile changes
- Relationships and sex life
- Talking to family and friends
- Managing fear, uncertainty, and recovery.
"The volunteer I spoke to answered all of my questions. He was very helpful and gave me a lot of encouragement moving forward in my cancer rehabilitation journey. I found that he was honest about what to expect in the future and gave me hope that the future was bright."
