From Ideas to Impact: Giving men more time with their loved ones

What's it about?

We’ll be joined by Professor Nicholas van As, Professor Emma Hall, and Dr Angela Pathmanathan, who are leading the PACE-NODES clinical trial to advance radiotherapy. This could lead to fewer men’s cancer coming back, with fewer treatment sessions needed.

When's it happening?

Wednesday 16 July 2025, 7pm-8:15pm (Live on Zoom)

Who will I hear from?

Dr Matthew Hobbs, Director of Research, Prostate Cancer UK

Dr Matthew Hobbs joined Prostate Cancer UK in 2013 as Deputy Director of Research, and in June 2020 became Director of Research. He is responsible for overseeing our ambitious research strategy and making sure that we fund the research with the best chance of making a difference for men.

Professor Nicholas van As, Consultant Clinical Oncologist and Chief Medical Officer of The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and Professor in Precision Prostate Radiotherapy at The Institute of Cancer Research

Professor Emma Hall, Professor of Oncology Trials and Director of the Clinical Trials and Statistics Unit at The Institute of Cancer Research, London

Dr Angela Pathmanathan, Consultant Clinical Oncologist at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and Honorary Clinical Academic in Radiotherapy at The Institute of Cancer Research

Gary Hastie-Davies, lived experience speaker

In 2009, Gary went to the doctor for something unrelated to prostate cancer. When the doctor asked if there was anything else he could help with, they went on to discuss potential prostate issues. As a result, the doctor recommended a blood test, which revealed an elevated prostate reading. Gary underwent a thorough investigation and discovered he had prostate cancer. He underwent radiotherapy treatment, but his PSA levels continued to rise and so he went on the STAMPEDE trial. Gary feels lucky to have caught his cancer when he did. He knew nothing about the disease prior to his diagnosis.

Catch up with some of our recent research webinars below.

March 2025: From Ideas to Impact - Rewriting the script on aggressive prostate cancer.

This webinar shared how cutting-edge technology could be used to direct cancer cells to ignore instructions written in their DNA that tell them to grow quickly. This could open the door for new treatments to slow aggressive prostate cancer, helping men live longer, healthier lives.

We heard from three researchers leading the project from Newcastle University, as well as a couple who shared the impact of prostate cancer on their lives, and their determination to live life to the fullest.

November 2024: From Ideas to Impact - Navigating prostate cancer risk factors with genetics.

This webinar explored how a combination of genetic data and artificial intelligence (AI) could predict if a man is likely to develop prostate cancer, and how aggressive the cancer might be.  This innovative research could lead to improved detection, personalised treatments, and potential ways to prevent the spread of prostate cancer.

We heard from three researchers who are leading the project from the Institute of Cancer Research and the University of East Anglia, and twin brothers who’ve both experienced prostate cancer brought their invaluable insights to the discussion.

March 2024: From Ideas to Impact - How to improve MRI.

This webinar revealed how advances in imaging are revolutionising the way we diagnose prostate cancer, and how developing MRI scans that are faster, cheaper and less invasive, could enable more men to get an earlier, more accurate diagnosis.

We heard from three researchers leading the project from University College London, and a man with lived experience of prostate cancer shared his enlightening story.

November 2023: From Ideas to Impact - New approaches to diagnosis and treatment.

This webinar explored groundbreaking new approaches that are being developed to diagnose and treat prostate cancer.

We heard from a researcher at the University of Birmingham who’s using sugars to diagnose aggressive prostate cancer, and a researcher at Ulster University who’s developing microscopic bubbles to deliver cancer-targeting drugs to the prostate.  A man with lived experience of prostate cancer also shared his personal journey, emphasising the importance of men knowing their risk.
