02 Aug 2023A 10-metre-tall Man of Men mural has been unveiled on London’s Fulham Road
We’ve teamed up with Global Street Art for an artistic twist on our iconic Man of Men to showcase the diversity of the 475,000 men in the UK living with or after prostate cancer.
For more than a decade, our Man of Men has been a symbol of courage and solidarity in the face of the most common cancer in men. It’s appeared on the backs of marathon runners and on the lapels of football managers up and down the country, and now it stands 10 metres tall on one London street.
An artistic twist on the Man of Men has been unveiled on London’s Fulham Road. Designed by Prostate Cancer UK and brought to life by the talented artists at Global Street Art, the mural showcases the diversity of the 475,000 men in the UK living with or after prostate cancer. It also serves as a poignant tribute to the 12,000 men who lose their lives to the disease each year.
The special design takes the classic 77 icons that form the Man of Men and transforms each one from a simple black outline to a vibrant and distinctive pattern, to demonstrate how the life of each man affected by prostate cancer is unique and remarkable. Among the patterns are illustrations of all four nations of the UK, including Scottish tartans, English roses, Welsh daffodils and Irish Celtic patterns.
The artwork also highlights the diversity of cultures and heritages which make up the UK, with African and Caribbean inspired patterns woven into the design to represent many of the 1 in 4 Black men who will get prostate cancer. The mural also includes icons with a rainbow design to represent members of the LGBT+ community affected by the disease.
One Londoner touched by the mural is Jacob Dunn, who lost his father in 2020 after he was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer, too late for a cure. Jacob now wants to work with us to ensure more men know their risk.
“The mural was completed on 3 August, on what would have been my dad’s 75th birthday, and it’s a fitting tribute to raise awareness of this disease and work to save more dads, brothers, sons and mates,” Jacob says.
A plaque below the mural also encourages people to check their prostate cancer risk using our 30-second risk checker. Prostate cancer often has no symptoms so men shouldn’t wait to see changes before they act. More than one million men have now checked their risk using our online tool, leading to potentially lifesaving conversations.
Global Street Art’s Head of Operations and Lead Artist, Pete Barber added: “One in eight men – brothers, dads, mates – will get prostate cancer. Charity murals like this – where my team can do our part to spread worthwhile messages – are one of the most rewarding parts of my job.
“If this partnership with Prostate Cancer UK gets even one lad to check their risk, then we’ve done what we set out to do.”
Those wishing to visit the mural can find it between 353-357 Fulham Road, opposite the Pizza Express and a short walk from Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge stadium and Fulham Broadway tube station.
Prostate cancer is treatable if caught early - and that’s why it’s crucial to check your risk and share the risk checker with the men you love.
It takes just 30 seconds and could save a life.
