30 Apr 2020Super supporter Brian takes on Joe Wicks' inspired challenge to keep moving
Faced with a long-period at home, supporter Brian Harrison needed a re-think to keep his fitness and fundraising challenges moving in these challenging times.
Meet our super supporter Brian Harrison. Diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer aged 64 in 2014, the fitness fanatic from Birmingham has taken upon himself to, like many others, to raise money for his favourite charity to pay back the support he has received following his diagnosis.
Six years on, and having raised £10,000 for Prostate Cancer UK on the march with Jeff Stelling or conquering Snowden, lockdown initially threatened to scupper Brian’s fitness and fundraising plans this year. With various events postponed and faced with a longer than usual stint indoors a rethink was in order.
“With no walks planned this year I wanted to do a home challenge. And I wanted to keep up my fundraising to give something back for all the help I’ve received from Prostate Cancer UK. I thought, what can I do? I’ll have a look at Joe Wicks’ workouts on YouTube for my next challenge" said sixty nine year old Brian.
Brian’s challenge, daily home workouts with YouTube fitness sensation Joe, will take him to 26th June 2020. The date he was diagnosed with prostate cancer six years earlier. At the time Brian hadn't even heard of prostate cancer. The subject came up, after he went to pick up a repeat prescription from the pharmacist. And following a PSA test, and a series of biopsies and scans Brian was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer which was understandably a massive shock for both him and his family.
26th June 2014 was when I was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer. And I started this challenge 70 days out from 26th June this year, a nice milestone to mark an early celebration for my 70th birthday this October too. It’s a tough challenge which keeps me on my toes. But needs must.
Long-term supporter Brian is helping us launch fundraiser Move for Men, a 30 day challenge lasting between 15, 30 or 60 mins a day. We’re leaving it to supporters to choose the way they move over 30 days, it doesn’t have to be as strenuous as Brian’s challenge. It’s just a bit of fun to show your support. And Brian’s leading the way.
“I’ve set up my JustGiving page and put it out there. I’m also getting donations for “Man of Men” badges and my football fundraiser, as well as some sponsorship from family and friends. It’s going well so far. I hope some others can join me moving for men.”
