December research newsletter
Welcome to the December edition of Research News!
Please get in touch with any feedback or suggestions for future editions of Research News.
Featured researcher: Dr Tristan Barrett
Dr Tristan Barrett from the University of Cambridge is this edition's featured researcher!
Read more about his research to develop and test an artificial intelligence (AI) tool to improve the quality of MRI scans and enable more accurate diagnosis of prostate cancer.
Researcher mentoring scheme
We’re delighted that our first cohort of mentors and mentees have all been matched ready to start their mentoring partnerships in the new year.
Making Progress
Places are filling up for Making Progress, our exciting event for Early Career Researchers, full of networking and skill building opportunities!
Registration is free for all attendees, and we cover travel costs for presenters! Submit an abstract to be considered for a talk or a poster.
We are also delighted to announce our new travel bursary to support researchers unable to attend Making Progress due to travel costs.
Check the webpage for more details and to register!
Where are you on social media?
We often use social media to share news about our funding calls, events, and funded research.
Social media use is changing, and we want to make sure we’re sharing updates and opportunities where it’s likely to have the most impact.
We'd be very grateful if you could complete this anonymous survey to let us know where you are - or aren’t - on social media. Completion should only take a few seconds.
Reusing data and samples - what are the challenges?
Cancer Research UK have launched a survey to explore opportunities for reusing data and samples in clinical and biological cancer research.
They hope to understand how data and samples are currently used, identify any challenges, and determine how they can support researchers to maximise the impact of their research.
Add your experiences to the survey!
Webinar - navigating prostate cancer risks with genetics
Professor Ros Eeles from the Institute of Cancer Research and Professors Colin Cooper and Dan Brewer from the University of East Anglia delivered a fantastic webinar on genetics and prostate cancer for our supporters. We were also privileged to be joined by Pete and Dave Cossie, twins with lived experience of prostate cancer, who brought their invaluable insights to the discussion.
The webinar was incredibly well received by our supporters, with 98% saying the event was excellent or good, and feedback including:
As a non-science person I'm always a little worried it might go over my head, but I'm pleased to say that I followed it all. I hope you will continue to allow us into the world of research - it enhances my work as a volunteer and keeps me really linked into Prostate Cancer UK.
You can read more about the research team's plans to use genetic data to predict prostate cancer progression and reduce recurrence, and catch up here with the recording of the webinar.
Health Inequalities Conference - save the date!
We are delighted to invite you to join our Data and Evidence team at an online mini-conference for researchers, healthcare professionals, and those with an interest in health inequalities and prostate cancer:

Chaired by Dr Abel Tesfai, our Senior Data and Evidence Officer, we'll delve into why Prostate Cancer UK is exploring health inequalities, starting with Black men, and highlight valuable research findings and challenges in the health inequalities space.
Our keynote speaker Dr Tom Cowling, Associate Professor of Clinical Epidemiology at The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and National Prostate Cancer Audit (NPCA) Methodology Lead, will share his insights from the latest England and Wales NPCA State of the Nation Report, including sociodemographic and tumour data from England.
We'll share registration details and the complete agenda in the new year!
