Two minutes with… a Specialist Nurse.

Everyone loves our new Man of Men mugs. We had a cuppa with Specialist Nurse Heather to hear about our new support services, how things have changed during the pandemic, and how she takes her tea.

Hello, Heather. How do you answer calls?

‘Hello, you're through to Heather, one of the Specialist Nurses. How can I help?’

That’s an Irish accent. How long have you been in London and how did you land in this job?

Yes, I’m from Mayo, I’ve been in London eight years now, and at Prostate Cancer UK for two years. My background is in oncology. The nurses on my team have different backgrounds but all of us have worked clinically at some point, either oncology, urology or palliative care.

So, what does a Specialist Nurse do?

We provide support and information to anybody affected by prostate conditions or prostate cancer – on telephone, live chat, email and social media. We talk through questions and concerns and help them with where to go next. They might be going through a difficult time or supporting a loved one.

We also have our fatigue service, and our sexual support service  speaking to men after they've had treatment for prostate cancer about how they can get support if their sexual function changes.

What would you say to someone who might be nervous or apprehensive about getting in touch?

Just call. You can also contact us on live chat or email. You’ll be met with a very friendly non-judgmental nurse who wants to listen to your story. I understand it can be daunting to have to speak to somebody in person or go to a clinic and talk about issues you’re experiencing, but over the phone it's anonymous. It’s a safe and secure platform. Whatever the issue, you don't have to be embarrassed in any way.

Has there been much of a change in the reasons for calls during the pandemic?

More men and partners are looking for emotional support. People will struggle with a cancer diagnosis at any time, but having had a diagnosis over the phone or not getting to speak to their consultant face-to-face can be difficult. We've also heard a lot more about delays to treatment and testing. As you’d expect, a lot of people feel that prostate cancer isn't the priority, and they're concerned that will impact their treatment. Thankfully, as we come out of lockdown, it's looking like that will be less of a concern for men and their families.

And finally, how do you take your tea?

Strong with a small bit of milk. And always the same Irish brand, which I can’t mention here!

14,784 people have received support and information from our Specialist Nurses in the last year. Grab your mug today and help make sure men and their families always have someone to talk to.
