Our Work with Black Communities

Our Black Health Equity and Engagement team works directly with Black communities to raise awareness, build trust, and improve understanding of prostate cancer – helping Black men access information, support, and earlier diagnosis.

Black men have double the risk of developing prostate cancer, yet too many are unaware of the importance of testing and early diagnosis. Our Black Health Equity and Engagement team is working to save lives by addressing the health inequalities disproportionately affecting Black Men.

Building trust and fostering strong relationships with Black communities are central to our work. We also connect Black men living with or after prostate cancer with services that help them navigate that journey.

Through partnerships with healthcare professionals, community engagement and advocacy initiatives, we aim to raise awareness and influence research to be more inclusive and representative.

We work closely with Black volunteers who support our work, ensuring our approach is informed and guided by the voices of the community. Together, we can ensure that we leave no man behind.

Community engagement

The Black Health Equity and Engagement team delivers community engagement activities at churches, community centres, health days and local events; these are trusted, familiar spaces where open and meaningful conversations can happen.

Bringing prostate cancer awareness directly into the community helps break down stigma, increase understanding of risk, and encourage Black men to speak to their GPs earlier.

We also highlight the free, confidential support services available if someone is diagnosed, including one-to-one support, expert information from specialist nurses, and guidance for partners and families. We currently reach Greater London and the West Midlands. We are building a national network, that will allow us to reach communities up and down the country, helping more Black men access information, support and care at every stage of their journey.

Collaborations

Meaningful change often happens through trusted relationships. That’s why The Black Health Equity and Engagement team partners and collaborates with trusted community organisations, businesses, groups and companies to raise awareness of prostate cancer within Black communities.

By working alongside organisations that already have strong connections, cultural understanding and credibility, we can reach Black men and their families with accurate, relevant information in spaces where they feel comfortable and respected.

These partnerships help break down barriers such as stigma, fear and lack of awareness, encourage earlier conversations with GPs, and ensure more Black men access support, information and potentially earlier diagnosis, ultimately helping to reduce health inequalities and save lives.

By drawing on the members' lived experience and professional expertise, the BMHAG helps the charity improve healthcare access by enhancing engagement with healthcare providers and researchers and sense-checking internal teams' projects where required. Members also collaborate with the charity to raise awareness of prostate cancer risks among Black men and Black communities, within their own spaces.
