Choosing which treatment to take is often a difficult and complex decision for men with advanced prostate cancer. Sometimes, it can mean choosing a treatment that will help keep them alive for longer but with side effects that can seriously impact their quality of life.
Men with advanced prostate cancer shouldn’t have to sacrifice so much of who they are for a treatment that keeps their cancer under control.

This is why we’re funding the ENHANCE research trial – to find out if men with advanced prostate cancer could still benefit from a lower dose of hormone therapy, while losing less of their quality of life to side effects.
Clinical evidence so far has focussed on finding the highest dose of hormone therapy that people can handle to keep their cancer under control. But for some men, the side effects of this treatment can become too severe to live with.
If the ENHANCE team can show that a lower dose of hormone therapy can be just as effective as the full dose, it would give us the confidence to start at that dose for all men. This would mean thousands of men could continue to take this life-extending treatment without having to sacrifice so much of themselves.

Paul's story
Meet Paul Mckenzie. Paul was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer in 2022 and is currently taking enzalutamide, which is helping control the spread of his cancer.
Pre-diagnosis, his life was fuelled by a passion for travelling – boat trips to Orkney, coach trips up the east coast of North America, visiting family in Belfast. But the side effects of hormone therapy have caused him to take a step back: “I'm struggling now because the enzalutamide affects my memory. And I've got no strength because it's killed the testosterone off. I've got brain fog. My knees and shoulders ache...” - Paul
