Living with prostate cancer can be a daunting experience, filled with uncertainty and challenges that often feel overwhelming. No one should face this alone - that’s why our One-to-One Peer Support Service connects people affected by prostate cancer with trained volunteers who've been through similar experiences.

Whether you're navigating a recent diagnosis, considering treatment options or managing the emotional toll of living with prostate cancer, our One-to-One Peer Support Service offers a safe space to share, listen and find strength in the words of someone who truly understands.
'I finally felt heard' - Maurice's story
When Maurice*, 73, was diagnosed with prostate cancer, he felt overwhelmed.
"I was very worried about what would be the after-effects of treatment and I didn’t know anyone who'd been through this,” he recalls. “I wondered how people who'd gone through it coped after”.
That’s when Maurice discovered our One-to-One Peer Support Service. He was matched with two volunteers - Paul and Wilf - who'd had surgery and radiotherapy themselves several years earlier.
"Speaking with Paul and Wilf gave me much reassurance," says Maurice.
"No question felt too silly to ask. They were honest about their experiences and gave me practical advice about what to expect going through the process of treatment. They didn't sugar-coat anything, which is exactly what you want.
“Most importantly, they listened and gave me the space and time to talk through my concerns - far more time than I got in the hospital. For the first time, I felt heard.
“I couldn't think of a better way of getting first-hand experience and knowledge from people who have experience of the same thing you’re going through."

Tailored support for every stage of the journey
Our service isn’t just for men with prostate cancer. It’s for anyone affected by the disease, including partners, family members and carers. Whether you're looking for advice on managing side effects, dealing with emotional challenges or simply seeking reassurance, our service can connect you with someone who understands.
Sarah*, whose husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer, found comfort in speaking with another carer: “I think at a time when you're feeling a bit confused and emotional, having access to support from people that know or have been there, is invaluable really.”
Sarah described the volunteer she spoke to as kind and compassionate - someone who really “knew their stuff”. And after their conversation Sarah felt more confident that she had the information to support her husband with a decision about his treatment.

Why peer support matters
Research shows that peer support can have a profound impact on your mental health and wellbeing. It offers:
- Empathy and understanding: Connect with someone who truly understands your experience.
- Practical advice: Learn from others who've navigated treatment, side effects and lifestyle changes.
- Emotional support: Share your worries and fears in a safe, confidential space.
Michael, who has had prostate cancer and been a long-time volunteer with our service, says peer support can have a transformative power.
"When I received my diagnosis, it felt like the rug had been ripped out from under me - I desperately wanted to talk to someone," he says.
"That’s why I’m drawn to volunteering. I want to become a beacon of hope, a testament to living a full life after diagnosis."
