Conference Support
Conferences and specialist meetings can provide valuable discussion, feedback, collaboration and networking opportunities.
Prostate Cancer UK are committed to supporting our funded Early Career Researchers to share their research findings at strategically important events in order to broaden their reach and support their career development.
Conference support can include a range of costs, such as:
Registration fees, accommodation, caring costs, subsistence (at the rates normally applied by the host institution) or preparation of presentation materials e.g. printing.
The maximum total that can be applied for is £2,000 including VAT.
Application Deadline
All applications received by 10 November 2026 will be considered equally.
If budget allows, any applications received after this date will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis.
Eligibility
To be eligible to apply for conference support, researchers must:
Be an Early Career Researcher - from final year PhD up to 5 years (clinical) or 10 years (non-clinical) post-doc experience.
Have submitted an abstract for an oral or poster presentation - the abstract can still be under review.
Present primary data arising from a Prostate Cancer UK-funded grant. This includes discovery research, clinical research and Real-World Evidence grants.
Explain why presentation of their research is likely to generate meaningful discussion, feedback, collaboration or career development.
Have investigated if alternative funding streams can be used to cover the costs e.g. conference allocation or underspend within the originating Prostate Cancer UK grant, institution funding, travel bursaries etc. If the conference costs can be partially covered by alternative funding, researchers can still apply to the RISE scheme for additional funding.
The proposed conference must:
Take place in the final 18 months of the grant, or up to one year after the completion of the grant.
Be a strategically important conference or specialist meeting e.g. an international, high impact event. If the event is in the UK, you must be able to justify why it would be impactful for your research or your career.
Selection criteria
Equal consideration will be given to all applications that are received before the deadline.
If we're unable to fund all applicants, researchers who have not previously been supported by the RISE scheme will be prioritised, followed by researchers working on grants that have not previously been supported.
If all eligible applications are still equally fundable, a lottery system will be utilised.
Applicant Commitments
Successful applicants must:
Acknowledge the Prostate Cancer UK RISE scheme on the conference presentation materials (including the Prostate Cancer UK logo) and in any public communications that result from the conference.
Provide a short report, blog, or other meaningful update about the impact of presenting at the conference, within a month of the event.
How do I apply for conference support?
Check the researcher and conference eligibility criteria outlined above, and make sure your abstract has been submitted to the conference.
Check with the grant holder to see if your conference costs can be covered (or partially covered) through the conferences allocation within the grant.
Check with your Prostate Cancer UK grant manager, or email [email protected] to see if any underspend on the grant can be used towards the conference costs.
Check if there are any other funding streams that can be used towards the conference costs.
Gather evidence that you have exhausted alternative funding streams e.g. an email from your PI or institution.
Prepare to explain why presenting at the proposed event may increase the impact of your research or support your career development.
Complete the RISE conference support application form before the deadline.
What happens next?
We aim to contact you within two weeks of the deadline with the outcome of your application.
If your abstract is still under review, please send us evidence that it has been accepted as soon as you receive it. If your abstract is not chosen for presentation at the conference, costs of attending can't be reimbursed.
Please send us your receipts as soon as possible, and at least two weeks before the conference, so we can reimburse the approved costs.

You can apply for all kinds of costs that will enable you to present at the conference. For example, registration fees, accommodation, printing costs, caring costs for dependents while you're away, costs of meeting your accessibility needs, subsistence (at the rate your institution normally pays). No, we must receive a copy of your abstract as part of the application form. This provides evidence that your presentation is based upon primary data originating from a Prostate Cancer UK grant, that the research is ready for presentation, and that you are committed to presenting at your proposed event.
Yes you can. Please detail the funding you have already received when you complete the RISE application form, and explain which further costs would enable you to present at the conference.
Yes. Please pay the costs and submit your receipts to [email protected] as soon as possible, and two weeks before the conference at the latest.
Please try and be as accurate as possible when applying for conference support and research the costs thoroughly. If you accidentally over-estimated your costs, please submit your receipts and we will reimburse the actual costs incurred. We're unable to reimburse costs that exceed the total amount approved, but we will aim to be flexible if the breakdown of costs slightly varies from the application form due to factors beyond your control.
Please submit your receipts as soon as possible, and at least two weeks before the conference.
No. Please wait until you have receipts for all your conference costs and submit them together so that we can make one overall reimbursement.
We expect that all receipts will be submitted at least two weeks before the conference, but if circumstances prevent this, please let us know in advance and we will try and accommodate your needs if we're able.
No. All costs must have detailed receipts, or equivalent evidence of costs incurred.
The conference must take place in the last 18 months of the grant, or within one year of the grant completion. This is so that we can target our support to researchers who are likely to benefit the most from increased visibility at an often uncertain time in their careers.
If your application is successful, we'll contact you to discuss the most appropriate format for you and the event. We're happy to be flexible, but the report must focus on the impact of receiving RISE funding.
Yes, you can apply as many times as you like. However, if we receive more eligible applications than we can fund, priority will be given to researchers who have not previously been supported by the RISE scheme.
If your abstract is not selected for presentation at the conference, we can't reimburse your costs. Therefore, please wait until you have notification that your abstract has been accepted before making any payments.
Please let us know if your abstract has been accepted as soon as you're notified. Timely notification may allow us to use RISE funds to support another researcher. If your abstract is not accepted, you are encouraged to apply to the scheme again in the future if you identify another strategically important event to submit your abstract to.
