Awareness volunteers
Community awareness volunteers are an integral part of our mission, spreading the word within their local community about prostate cancer risk and passionately advocating to make sure that no man dies of prostate cancer, particularly within the Black community where men face double the risk.
Our awareness volunteers are vital to helping us reach every man across the UK. They usually have lived experience of prostate cancer, whether themselves or from supporting a loved one, with dedicated Black Health Equity volunteers focusing on raising awareness and encouraging earlier detection among those most at risk.
Many have been sharing their experiences to help men for well over a decade, using their local knowledge to find spaces in their communities to have real conversations about prostate cancer or reaching larger groups through virtual talks.
We make sure volunteers have all the resources they need to carry out this flexible role, including online and in-person training opportunities, as well as ongoing support from our friendly team and other volunteers in our community.
Volunteer spotlight
After being diagnosed in 2018, Peter decided that he wanted to make a difference by talking to men.
My favourite part is seeing a guy after an awareness talk who thanks me, shakes my hand and says he will get tested. One of the most memorable talks I ever had was at an old person's day centre. Afterwards, with tears in her eyes, a woman came up to me and took my hand and didn't let go until she finished talking. She had lost her husband and her son to prostate cancer. She never knew what to say to her other sons and nephews but now, because of my talk, she knows what to say to them.

We’re currently focusing on supporting our existing community awareness volunteers, but we’re excited to begin onboarding new volunteers in mid-2026, particularly in North-West England, the West Midlands, Devon, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
In the meantime, we’d love for you to register your interest using the form below. You can also request to chat with an existing volunteer to learn more about the role, including the time commitment and training involved.
