Make your gift go further with Gift Aid
Your donations to Prostate Cancer UK could be worth 25% more when you tick the box and sign up to Gift Aid - this tax relief scheme lets Prostate Cancer UK claim back basic rate tax on your donation, as long as you’ve paid enough UK tax in that tax year.
For every pound you donate, Prostate Cancer UK receives an extra 25p from the government, at no extra cost to you*. The great news is that we can claim Gift Aid up to the previous 4 years when you complete one of our Gift Aid Declarations.
When you tick the box on a Gift Aid Declaration, your gift goes further to help men and their loved ones.
Gift Aid makes your donations tax efficient. Once you give us your permission to claim by filling out a Gift Aid Declaration, we can make your gift go further, increasing its value by 25%. For example, a £10 gift would be worth £12.50.
You can donate easily via our website, including setting up a regular recurring gift. You can also donate with us when you order health information or buy our merchandise on our online shop.
* To qualify for the scheme, you must be a UK taxpayer, and one of the following should apply:
Income tax is deducted from your salary before you receive it.
You pay income tax after submitting a self-assessment form each year.
You have an income taxable pension plan, savings, or investment income.
You have paid capital gains tax, such as on the sale of property or shares.
The Gift Aid we claim on your gifts must not exceed the total amount of tax you pay within the same tax year. This includes other Gift Aided donations you may make to other charities in the same tax year. For example, if you donate £100 in one tax year, we'll claim £25 of Gift Aid. So you’ll need to have paid a minimum of £25 in income or capital gains tax during that same tax year.
Here’s our online Gift Aid Declaration, and a PDF version if you’d prefer to print and email/post this back to us.
Certain donations don’t qualify for Gift Aid. We won’t claim if one of the following applies:
You’ve donated to Prostate Cancer UK but you don’t pay tax in the UK.
Your donation was made in exchange for goods or services, like gaining entry to an event or a raffle ticket.
You've donated on behalf of a company or business. Only individual taxpayers can make Gift Aid declarations by donating their own personal money. Companies can claim different tax relief when they donate to charity.
You've donated on behalf of another person – the donation must be your own money. We can’t accept declarations completed on someone else’s behalf.
We don’t currently operate the Gift Aid Small Donations Scheme (GASDS).
We’re so grateful when communities come together to collect for Prostate Cancer UK, but eligibility relates to an individual’s personal tax record in the UK. This means we won’t claim Gift Aid if a donation comes to us from an individual having pooled money on behalf of friends and family.
Our sponsorship forms are a good option if you want your collection to make the most impact. Each UK taxpayer contributing can tick the Gift Aid box on the form. Each donor must fill out their own personal details to qualify. This way, your collection will go even further to help men and their loved ones.
You may still be subject to tax when claiming your pension so you might be able to sign up to Gift Aid. If you pay tax on income from a private pension plan or interest earned from savings accounts, you can Gift Aid your donations. If you sell property or shares, you may also pay capital gains tax. This must at least match the value of Gift Aid that Prostate Cancer UK claims in the same tax year (and any other charities you support).
No, Gift Aid is sourced from tax you've already paid, so there is no cost to you (as long as the Gift Aid claimed by all charities you’re signed up with doesn’t exceed the tax you’ve paid in that year). If you need to change any details, don’t hesitate to get in touch with our team by emailing [email protected].
Let us know as soon as you can. We’ll stop claiming Gift Aid and end the declaration on your record from the date you tell us. The best way to do this is by contacting us on [email protected]. We also mention Gift Aid (where applicable) in the thank you letters we’ll send you in recognition of your generous gift, so you have a reminder and will see our contact details printed there so you can let us know if Gift Aid doesn’t apply.
When you first sign up with us, you have 30 days to withdraw your declaration which is why we’ll always send you a letter acknowledging this. After that, we may have already claimed Gift Aid against your donation. There’s no mechanism for us to reverse what was a valid Gift Aid claim when we submitted to HMRC. Even if we repay gift aid, a donor’s individual tax record remains unchanged, so HMRC can still recover this amount from the donor.
Yes. A single Gift Aid declaration can cover past donations (up to 4 years) and all future donations, until you tell us otherwise. From time to time, we may ask you to complete a new Gift Aid declaration to make sure the information we hold for you remains accurate. Renewing declarations every few years is considered best practice - it keeps Prostate Cancer UK records up to date and gives you an opportunity to let us know if your personal details or circumstances change. If you receive our appeals in the post, all you have to do is tick the relevant Gift Aid box when you complete and return your donation form to us.
A Prostate Cancer UK Gift Aid Declaration will ask you for your personal contact details and contain the following wording:
I understand that Prostate Cancer UK will reclaim 25p of tax on every £1 that I give. Gift Aid is reclaimed by Prostate Cancer UK from the tax I pay for the current tax year. I understand that if I pay less Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax than the amount of Gift Aid claimed on all my donations in that tax year it is my responsibility to pay any difference. I will notify Prostate Cancer UK if I wish to cancel this declaration, change my name or home address, or no longer pay sufficient tax on my income and/or capital gains. I understand that I cannot Gift Aid any donations made by, or on behalf of a group, company or someone else.
The declaration will have a box for you to ‘tick’. Here’s our online Gift Aid Declaration, and a PDF version if you’d prefer to print and email or post this back to us. Please complete the form with your full first name and surname.
Please let us know as soon as you're able so we can update your record. Your declaration remains valid, but accurate details help us maintain compliance. We may ask you to complete another declaration if needed. Here’s our online Gift Aid Declaration where you could do this in just a few minutes! Please complete the form with your full first name and surname.
Yes, you can cancel at any time by contacting us on [email protected]. We’ll stop claiming Gift Aid on any future donations from the date you contact us. We can still claim on eligible past donations covered by your declaration.
No. There is no minimum or maximum donation amount — as long as you meet the eligibility criteria, Gift Aid can be claimed on any qualifying donation.
A valid declaration with the appropriate wording as above can cover future donations, but it’s good practice to renew declarations every few years to make sure records are up to date. Some charities offer ‘one-off’ declarations that cover a specific gift only. Personal tax status and donation eligibility will always apply with Gift Aid, but we recommend that you read the wording on every Gift Aid Declaration carefully as the wording around the duration may differ slightly across charities.
You can request this from us, and we’ll be happy to email you a letter with this information. Please get in touch with [email protected] or [email protected].
