Leading retailers bring prostate cancer awareness to high streets and homes across the UK

This Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, we’re joining forces with five UK retailers to reach one million men with life-saving information and encourage them to take the first step to understand their risk.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men and is now the most common cancer in the UK, with more than 64,000 men diagnosed each year.

1 in 8 men will get prostate cancer in their lifetime – and this risk is even higher for men over 50, black men, men with a family history of prostate cancer, and men who have the BRCA gene

An early diagnosis can save lives, but early-stage prostate cancer often has no symptoms, making it harder to detect. That’s why it’s crucial for men to be aware of their risk, and take action early, even if they feel completely well.

Taking action for Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

This March, in honour of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, we’re partnering with leading retailers on the Retail Together campaign to spread this message even further.

As part of this campaign, Iceland Foods and the Food Warehouse, The Range, Wilko, and Homebase, have all launched informative campaigns to encourage men – and the people who care about them – to have open conversations about prostate cancer and learn about their risk.

Prostate Cancer UK has worked with the Iceland Foods Charitable Foundation for over a decade, building a long-standing relationship focused on improving men's health. As Laura Kerby, Chief Executive of Prostate Cancer UK, puts it, "it’s fantastic to be working with them once again to reach men to help them understand their risk of prostate cancer.

“Although prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, too many men are being diagnosed by chance. Having such prominent retailers commit to helping us reach men will make a huge impact."

How Retail Together is sparking nationwide awareness

Prostate cancer can sometimes feel scary to talk about, and many people don’t know where to start. Retail Together aims to make these conversations less intimidating and break the silence around men’s health while raising awareness about the disease across the country.

Throughout March, participating retailers will use their stores and social media platforms to share information and resources outlining prostate cancer risk factors, key facts and figures, and guidance on how women can start conversations with the men in their lives about the disease.

By bringing the message into everyday spaces – from shop floors to social media feeds – the campaign will reach millions of people who might not otherwise engage with health information and spur men on to check their risk, potentially saving their lives.

As well as the resources, shoppers of The Range will be able to find QR codes in-store with more information about prostate cancer and how to check their risk.

Speaking of the partnership, Tarsem Dhaliwal OBE, Group Chief Executive of Iceland Foods and Prostate Cancer UK ambassador, said: “Prostate cancer is now the most common cancer in men, yet too many still don’t know their risk or feel able to talk about it.

“That’s why we’re proud to stand alongside other major retailers this March to help reach millions of men with vital information. By sharing clear, accessible messages in our stores and on our social channels, we want to encourage men, and those close to them, to take a moment to check their risk using Prostate Cancer UK’s Risk Checker."
