Peer Support for Black Men Steering Group
Purpose of the steering group
The One-to-One peer support service offers anyone affected by prostate cancer the opportunity to speak to a trained support volunteer with lived experience over the phone. Last year we ran focus groups with black men, as we recognised this was a group we were underserving.
We heard from these groups that there is an appetite for the model of peer support we currently offer but it was important to have a peer support service that feels like it is designed by black men and for black men.
Based on this feedback, we are looking for black men with lived experience of prostate cancer to help us shape our new peer support service for black men.
What you'll do as a steering group member
We want to ensure the voices of black men are central to the planning of the new peer support service. Steering group members will provide guidance, constructive feedback and offer insights on the peer support needs of black men. Once the new peer support service is launched steering group members will also support the promotion and communication of the service within their networks.
What is the time commitment?
- A 90-minute kick off meeting followed by a one-hour meeting once a month until launch of the new service in summer 2025.
- As a gesture of thanks and appreciation we will offer a £20 Marks and Spencer's voucher for your time and contribution to each meeting.
We would love for you to stay on as a peer support volunteer once the new service is launched. Find out more about what being a peer support volunteer entails.
Key qualities you'll have as a steering group member

- Effective communication skills with an ability to listen to others and confidently express your own views.
- An ability to work effectively and positively as part of team.
- Have an interest in the organisations Health Equity work which aims to reduce the health inequalities faced by black men.
