EDF Energy

Through talks, events and awareness days, we've worked with EDF Energy to start thousands of lifesaving conversations about prostate cancer with staff.

Kicking off lifesaving conversations about men's health

In 2020, we joined forces with EDF Energy to begin a partnership aiming to raise awareness of prostate cancer among the company's largely male, 12,000-strong workforce, while also raising vital funds to support men affected by the disease. Over four impactful years, this collaboration inspired lifesaving conversations around men’s health and raised more than £800,000 to support our work.

To reach EDF's workforce nationwide, we worked closely with their 'charity champions' to organise awareness days at each EDF site across the UK. These events, featuring volunteers who shared personal stories of their experiences with prostate cancer, fostered open discussions and helped dismantle stigmas around men’s health.

The sessions encouraged employees to approach EDF’s occupational health teams with their concerns about prostate cancer or prostate problems. And we stepped in to provide extra training, helping EDF respond effectively to these enquiries. We also teamed up with EDF’s mental health first aiders, equipping them to support colleagues returning to work after cancer treatment.

I’m really proud of all our employees who continue to be an inspiring force for good. Every penny we raise is going to help fund vital, lifesaving research, support from Specialist Nurses and much more. It will really help this charity to do great things for men and their families.

Far-reaching impact on a nationwide scale

The COVID-19 pandemic presented early challenges, as we were forced to cancel some of our planned fundraising events. But the team at EDF responded by supporting our emergency appeal with a £25,000 donation and shifted many of their initiatives online, raising an impressive £177,000 in the first year of our partnership.

The company's employees went on to take part in a variety of creative fundraising events, such as the 'Tour de Sizewell' cycling challenge and a trek along the Pyrenees Freedom Trail. EDF’s sponsorship of Gloucester Rugby also meant we could deliver prostate health awareness training through community outreach.

The partnership’s measurable impact has been significant. Nearly 200 EDF employees who were at risk of prostate cancer used our 30-second online risk checker via a tracked QR code. And following our awareness sessions, EDF reported marked improvements in their team's understanding of prostate cancer.

With around 70% of our employees being male, prostate cancer is a disease that will affect many of our workforce - either first-hand or their loved ones. We want to do our bit to ensure all men are aware of their risk of prostate cancer and take action before it’s too late.

Engaging thousands of staff to talk about prostate health

Beyond raising funds and awareness, EDF’s unrestricted donations have made a big impact across all aspects of our work. The partnership engaged thousands of employees in meaningful discussions, leading EDF to create a Men’s Club - a safe space for men to discuss their health issues openly.

The collaboration also led to prostate cancer resources being added to EDF’s online health library. And an EDF employee even enrolled in a genetic research study focused on prostate cancer in Black men, building further on the partnership’s impact and legacy.
