Grandad inspires Emily's epic running streak
“Never give up, never give in.” That mantra is shared by Emily Talman and her grandad Peter, with their strong bond inspiring an incredible year-long fundraising adventure for Prostate Cancer UK.
Wirral schoolgirl and big football fan Emily completed an epic running challenge after her grandad was successfully treated for the most common cancer in men.
The intrepid 12-year-old, who also plays for two local football teams, ran every day starting in November 2021, triumphantly crossing the finishing line 365 days later.
Grandad Peter Talman, 69, was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2019, and had successful surgery to remove his prostate in 2020.
He remains cancer free, and after watching the Pride of Britain Awards Emily was inspired to do something extraordinary to raise funds and awareness - a 3k run each and every day.
She said: “Me and my grandad are really close. I was heartbroken when I heard he had prostate cancer and thought he was going to be taken away from us.
“I feel like the luckiest girl in the world to still have him in my life. I just wanted to do something to help other families overcome this terrible disease. The best advice grandad has ever given me is to never give up, never give in, and that’s helped me in the last year for sure.”
Peter added: “It’s amazing what Emily has achieved, and her efforts will help so many men like me. It’s been so wonderful to see her take this on and as someone affected by this disease, I’m truly humbled.”
