WATCH: Luke knew his prostate cancer risk, and it saved his life.

Luke was diagnosed with prostate cancer aged 49. Now he's on a mission to ensure more men are aware of their risk before it’s too late.

Luke shares his prostate cancer story

In the UK, 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer.

For Black men, however, that risk increases to 1 in 4.

“Knowledge is key,” says Luke, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer aged 49.

Luke is very familiar with the risks of prostate cancer for Black men. His dad died from prostate cancer, and his uncle has been diagnosed with the disease.

This awareness helped Luke catch his prostate cancer early: “To an extent, I was lucky,” he says. By knowing his risk, he was able to push for a diagnosis.

“My initial GP missed that fact that I had prostate cancer twice and when I was due to have another full ‘MOT check-up’, including a PSA test, I went with a new GP who paid attention. Six weeks later, I was told I had prostate cancer.”

Since then, he’s made sure his three brothers are aware of their increased risk. And this Black History Month, he’s sharing his story to ensure many more men understand their risk.

“Every Black man who wants to celebrate the future needs to find out more.”
