Radiotherapy can irritate the lining of the bladder and the urethra – this is known as radiation cystitis. Radiation cystitis has a number of symptoms. Select any of the images to find out what the symptoms are.

A need to urinate often, including at night.
This is because radiation can damage the bladder opening (sphincter) and urethra.

A burning feeling when you urinate.
Radiation can irritate and damage the urethra making it painful when you pass urine through it.

Difficulty urinating
This is because radiotherapy can irritate the urethra, making it swell up and close off. Radiotherapy can also cause the prostate to swell and press against the urethra. 

Blood in the urine
This is because radiation can irritate the lining of the bladder and urethra, making it weak and easily damaged.
