Men United

Ignoring prostate cancer won't beat it

The message

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. It’s a huge issue that we can’t ignore because it has major implications for men, their families and society as a whole.

Currently, one man an hour dies from prostate cancer in the UK. That’s 10,900 men in a year. But if we ignore prostate cancer and do nothing, this number will rise to over 14,500 men a year by 2026. And by 2030, it’s predicted to be the most common cancer overall.

But you can change that. Your support could help us tame this terrible disease and cut future deaths dramatically in the next decade.

Our bold new strategy – Ten years to tame prostate cancer – focuses on four priority areas:

  • Better diagnosis
  • Better treatment
  • Better prevention
  • Better support

Consulting with researchers, health professionals and men affected by prostate cancer, it's based on what we know now and what we can build on using this knowledge.

But it all depends on your support to help us fund the research that will stop prostate cancer being a killer.

Thank you for not ignoring prostate cancer. Now join the fight to beat it with us, Men United.

About

Meet the stars of our new TV ad, where the awkward father-son conversation about the changes to your body as you get older is turned on its head. Cue teenaged reprimands and middle-aged tantrums as the dad is sent to his room to join the fight against prostate cancer before he can go out to play with his golf buddy Dave.

The advert is the latest drive to inspire and grow our army of supporters, Men United, and will be hitting TV screens and cinemas across the UK from 23 April 2016.

Meet the son

“Contrary to my dad’s suspicions, when I’m surfing the internet for hours in my bedroom, I’m often looking at sites about men’s health. After granddad died recently from prostate cancer, I’ve been reading about the increased risk for men over 50 with a family history of the disease. I don’t say it often, but I love my dad and I can’t let him ignore the dangers of his prostate any longer. It’s time to stage an intervention, no matter how uncomfortable the subject matter.”

We're urging people who watch the TV ad to join the fight against prostate cancer by visiting our website, where the son will welcome them with a cheeky quiz about being a grown man and prostate cancer.

Meet the dad

“I’m 50 and in the prime of my life, both personally and professionally. I’ve got a designated middle manager's parking space at work, a membership at the local golf club, and the infirmities of old age are still a long way off yet. What’s there to worry about? Now if my son would just let me go for a round of golf with Dave, I can get on with working on my handicap.”

We know that some men will do anything to avoid awkward subjects, but we also know that prostate cancer cannot be ignored. By shining a light on this serious issue with a bit of gentle humour, we hope more men will be aware of their own risk and join us in the fight to stop prostate cancer being a killer.
