Dave's masterclass

Dave Garbett is one of last year’s top London to Amsterdam Challenge fundraisers, and a winner of one of our coveted orange jersey’s for top fundraisers. While having Preston North End manager Simon Grayson on his team clearly helped, it’s not the be all and end all for anyone looking to smash their target when taking on fundraising challenge.

Dave’s dad, Stephen Garbett, fought prostate cancer for ten years, but sadly passed away late last year. Dave and his mates, buoyed by the support from Simon & their local community, took on the Amsterdam challenge to raise money to try and make sure other men, like Stephen, and their families, don’t suffer like the Garbett’s.

The plan

Here’s what Dave, Simon and their mates' got up to for their fundraising:

  1. Charity celeb football match with silent auction and tombola
  2. A Gentleman's dinner (an annual event - this year they chose Prostate Cancer UK in memory of Stephen) where you buy a ticket to attend
  3. Fundraiser at Leeds Corinthian’s rugby club with a raffle, auction, and a live band
  4. A friend of theirs took on the “3 peaks challenge” and put the money raised into their JustGiving for the bike ride.
  5. A local cafe is donated 20p from each food sale between 10am and 2pm for a month.
  6. Local shops placed collection tins and Men United badges on counters (all that knew Stephen personally)
  7. Q&A evenings in Leeds and Preston with Simon - selling tickets to attend as well as a raffle and auction on the night
  8. "Bullying" the local rugby club lads on a Saturday to give up their loose change before they leave!
  9. Lined up some businesses to sponsor our cycle jerseys @£500/sponsor – so far we have 7 sponsors (£3500) and are working on one more!
  10. It was Dave's birthday April 24th so he asked people to donate/sponsor £3 instead of buying him a beer. And use social media to try and obtain more “pint donations”.

Their team page on JustGiving raised over £41,000 (with more to be added from the events).
