After his epic fundraising march last year, walking ten marathons in ten days for Prostate Cancer UK, the Soccer Saturday host is back and looking to make it 15 marathons this time with an astonishing £500k target. He tells us why he's so keen to go through the punishing highs and lows all over again.
"They say I can talk the talk, and now I’ve walked the walk," said an exhausted Jeff Stelling on the Wembley turf at the end of last year's epic 262-mile march, covering ten marathons in ten days.
Well now the Soccer Saturday host has talked himself into an even greater challenge, promising to walk 15 marathons over 15 days from Exeter City FC to Newcastle United FC at the start of June – a distance of 400 miles.
"My feet are feeling the pain already, but it will be worth it," says Jeff, who hopes to raise more than £500k for Prostate Cancer UK this time. "After the agony and ecstasy of the walk last year, so many people have been in touch with stories of their battle against prostate cancer, and wanting to say thank you to me, to Russ Green, and to Prostate Cancer UK for their support.
"It makes me feel very humble and gratified that I’m in a position where I can do something. Prostate cancer kills one man ever hour in the UK, and I just decided I couldn’t sit on my backside and do nothing about it. I can put one foot in front of the next and hopefully raise awareness and funds to help men beat this diabolical disease."
On his cross-country journey from one St James' Park to another, Jeff will stop off at 40 football clubs, including eight Premier League and 11 Non-League sides. Full details of his route can be found at MarchforMen.org.
"Crucially, it gives us that opportunity to go to parts of the country that we’ve not been to before to get our message over to people who maybe didn’t hear that message as loudly last time round," says Jeff.
So it sounds like the star man is planning to talk as big as his walk this year, too. Good luck Jeff! We'll see you in Newcastle...
