Congratulations to the seven members of Carlsberg UK’s legal team for completing a 1,000km virtual cycle ride and raising over £5,000 for Men United.

Some of the cyclicts who did a 1,000km virtual ride

Starting at midday on Monday 2 March (the birthday of Carlsberg’s founder, J.C. Jacobsen), the team cycled for 24 hours to travel the virtual distance between Carlsberg UK’s Northampton head office, and the birthplace of the Carlsberg brand, Copenhagen. The event was supported by a raffle and a colleague cycle challenge where other staff competed to cycle as far as possible in 10 seconds.

This is the first stage of our corporate partner, Carlsberg UK’s ‘Challenge 1847’ series, named after the year the company was founded. Forthcoming stages – which combine to create the number 1847 – will involve 800 minutes of voluntary work for the charity from May to July at football league matches, participation in Shirt2Work day, and a 47 mile Wolf Run in September where the team will run, climb and swim across natural terrain as a pack.

Carlsberg’s 1847 Challenge is a really clever idea that gets to the heart of what Men United is all about

- Mark Bishop, Director of Fundraising, Prostate Cancer UK

Catherine Harris, Legal Counsel at Carlsberg UK and one of the virtual cyclists, said: “We wanted to do something that celebrated the great heritage of Carlsberg, supports Prostate Cancer UK and really captured people’s imaginations. The response from within the business and the wider community has been incredible and we have been really touched by all of the support we’ve received.

“Part of the challenge was staying awake for over 36 hours, and overnight we played games like ‘I spy’ to keep ourselves from falling asleep. The physical and mental elements of the challenge really brought us together as a team to support one another.”

Mark Bishop, our Director of Fundraising added: “Carlsberg’s 1847 Challenge is a really clever idea that gets to the heart of what Men United is all about – doing great stuff with friends and workmates that has a real purpose. The Carlsberg team has made a cracking start, and the money raised will help us beat prostate cancer once and for all.

“Men United is all about friendship and we’re proud to be not just partners with Carlsberg, but good friends with this historic company as well. We can’t wait to see how the team does in the next stage of this challenge, and in all the other activities Carlsberg employees are signing up to do.”
