The Travis Perkins Group, the leading Builders' Merchant and DIY
retailer which owns Travis Perkins, Keyline Builders' Merchants and
Wickes, has teamed up with The Prostate Cancer Charity and TV
personality, Tommy Walsh, to raise awareness of the disease to more
than 18,000 employees in time for Father's Day.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK. It
is a disease which kills 10,000 men every year in the UK. The
Travis Perkins Group, which has 78% male employee base, has taken
Father's Day as its inspiration to urge all of its employees to be
aware of their health; help their loved ones become aware of their
health, and encourage them to contact the Charity if they have any
queries or concerns.
250,000 men are living with prostate cancer and for families
affected by the disease, Father's Day can be a particularly
significant time. The Travis Perkins Group and the Charity have
sent a dedicated prostate cancer information leaflet to all
employees with their payslip, and featured the campaign on its
intranet. It includes a special message from celebrity builder
Tommy Walsh, who has encouraged employees to share the information
with their loved ones this Father's Day, and help the Charity and
The Travis Perkins Group fight prostate cancer on every front.
Tommy Walsh said: "I am very proud to support the Travis Perkins
Group who are this month joining forces with The Prostate Cancer
Charity. More than 37,000 men are diagnosed with prostate
cancer every year in the UK and one man dies every hour, so it is
absolutely crucial that the men in your lives know as much as they
can about this disease."
David Manning, Group Internal Communication Manager for The
Travis Perkins Group, said: "With such a high proportion of our
employees being men, it is only right that, as a leading company,
we demonstrate our responsibility for their welfare by driving
awareness of prostate cancer. We hope that, through the leaflet
campaign and intranet feature, the awareness message has been
delivered loud and clear, and employees check for signs of prostate
cancer, seek the appropriate professional advice and make their
loved ones aware."
Mark Bishop, Director of Fundraising for The Prostate Cancer
Charity said: "Whilst awareness levels of prostate cancer are
higher than they once were, it remains the most common cancer
diagnosed in men in the UK. Finding out about the disease is
critical in fighting prostate cancer. That's why we're thrilled
that Travis Perkins is helping us to spread the message this
Father's Day. Seventy eight per cent of Travis Perkins employees
are men so it seemed like the perfect time to get the message
across."
The Father's Day mailing complements the work by Keyline
Builders' Merchants, part of the Travis Perkins Group. The company
has worked in partnership with The Prostate Cancer Charity since
November 2009, winning an award for the partnership at the Third
Sector Business Charity Awards last month, which recognises the
charitable contributions of corporate Britain.
