Men across the land are preparing to prune, nurture and groom
their way to the perfect moustache as the month formerly known as
Movember is back.
First-time Mo Bro, Owen Sharp, Chief Executive of The Prostate
Cancer Charity, prepared for the start of Movember on Tuesday by
getting his facial hair shaved off at the annual 'Shave Down' at
Penhaligon's in Convent Garden, London, which has partnered with
Movember, opening its historic barber's shop for the month. Owen
has, since then, been surveying his top lip to decide the style and
shape his bristles will take.
Owen is not alone in letting his whiskers break free, now that
moustache season is open. More than 160,000 men have already signed
up to grow a moustache this month, which indicates that this year's
Movember looks set to be the largest and most successful yet.
Speaking about the month-long campaign, Owen says: "Even though
on the face-of-it Movember appears to be a light-hearted campaign,
it has been hugely successful in not only raising millions of
pounds for research into prostate cancer, but also managing to get
younger men to start thinking about their health.
"It's great to be joining 160,000 (and counting) men across the
country in ditching the razor to raise money and an increased
understanding of prostate cancer - the most common cancer in men in
the UK. We know that men's health often lags behind as an issue,
both in terms of investment in research and in awareness. Prostate
cancer has certainly been subject to this legacy of neglect and
Movember is helping us to redress this balance and put men's health
firmly in the spotlight."
Since its humble beginnings in Melbourne Australia in 2003,
Movember has grown to become a truly global movement inspiring more
than 1.1 million Mo Bros and Mo Sistas to participate so far.
Last year over 111,000 Mo Bros and Mo Sistas across the UK
raised an amazing £11.7 million. These funds are directed to
programmes run directly by Movember and their men's health partners
The Prostate Cancer Charity and The Institute of Cancer
Research.
For one month only Mo Bros will be able to experience a
complimentary Mo Trim at Penhaligon's flagship boutique in London's
Covent Garden.
