National Opportunities
Upcoming Speaker Training
We are recruiting for volunteer Speakers across the UK.
What is a volunteer Speaker?
Volunteer Speakers represent Prostate Cancer UK at a range of
different events giving talks about prostate cancer, their personal
experience and the work of the charity.
Who can be a volunteer Speaker?
Anyone can do this role, if you are personally affected by
prostate cancer we ask that it's at least 6 months since your
diagnosis or bereavement before you can attend training.
I'm interested… What do I need to do?
If you think the role is for you, you will receive an informal
telephone interview and will then be invited on a 1.5 day training
course.
Here are the regional dates:
Midlands - 16 June & 18 July in Birmingham
London & South East - 16 May & 5 June in London
North of England - 11 June & 12 June in Newcastle
You will need to attend both dates in order to be able to do
this role. There are a limited number of places on this course so
they will be given on a first come first served basis. If you are
unable to make this training but are still interested in the role
we will be running it again later in the year so do still get in
touch!
Exciting chance to talk about your experience on
ITV
Prostate Cancer UK is working on a very exciting opportunity
with ITV to raise awareness of prostate cancer during the run up to
Father's Day on Sunday 16 June. During the week commencing 10
June, ITV will be interviewing people affected by the disease,
talking about the risk factors and publicising the work Prostate
Cancer UK is doing for men all over the country.
What are Volunteers needed to do?
A very important part of the partnership between Prostate Cancer
UK and ITV will be to talk about the disease and its effects,
through the experiences of men and their families. Programmes
like Loose Women, Daybreak, This Morning and all the regional news
programmes around the country will be covering the story.
I'm interested!
If you are interested and would be available around that time in
June that time to talk about your experience for television or
radio, get in touch with the following information:
- What led to the diagnosis and when were you / your partner /
family member diagnosed?
- Tell us a little bit about your experience and what treatment
you or your partner / family member had
- What is life like now?
This is an absolutely brilliant opportunity for us to raise
awareness of prostate cancer with millions of ITV viewers so please
get in touch!
Help us promote the Peer-Support Service on Social
Media
We want to start promoting the Peer-Support service on Facebook
and thought the best way to do that would be to get our
Peer-Support volunteers involved!
What are you planning?
We'd like our peer support volunteers to put together mini case
studies about themselves. This will help us to bring a face to the
peer support service and may help to increase the number of people
who know about and use the service.
What do I need to do?
We'd like you to send us 2 or 3 photos of yourself doing
something you enjoy and a bit of information (no more than 150
words) about what treatment you had and any relevant side effects
that you wouldn't mind us sharing on Facebook. We'd also like to
know more about your life since your diagnosis and treatment,
including any hobbies or work you've been doing. And anything else
you would want use to share.
We will edit anything you send us to under 75 words and may make
some changes to make sure it's Plain English so that it's suitable
for Facebook. We will make sure to include all of your key points
and let you see it before it goes on Facebook.
How do I get involved?
Please send your pictures and stories, please be aware that we
won't be able to use all of them but will get in touch to let you
know if we are using yours.

Help out the Midlands Community Support Service's Team
by taking part in a Holistic Needs Assessment
A Holistic Needs Assessment (HNA) is "a process of gathering and
discussing information with the patient and/ or carer /supporter in
order to develop an understanding of what the person living with
and beyond cancer knows, understands and needs. This holistic
assessment is focused on the whole person, their entire well-being
is discussed - physical, emotional, spiritual, mental, social, and
environmental."
The Midlands Community Support Service's team would like to
invite volunteers to take part in helping us try out a HNA service.
We wish to make HNA's part of the community nurse specialist's
service available to men with prostate cancer and their families in
the Midlands. You will have the opportunity undergo a HNA, to
comment on the value of the process and make recommendations to how
it may be improved.
