Notts County

Bloggers' guide to the season

This season Prostate Cancer UK is the official charity of The Football League. To celebrate, we've asked bloggers from each of the 72 clubs to count down their top five strikers to have worn the No9 shirt, in recognition of the fact that prostate cancer affects one in nine men.

Here blogger Stuart Brothers, of thenottsblog.co.uk, selects Notts County's five best No9s… and one to forget!

5. Lee Hughes (2009-)
To kick off the top five I'm going with Lee Hughes. At Notts we certainly have plenty of goalscorers ahead of Hughesy in our colours - but simply put, he's the greatest goalscorer that I've been fortunate enough to see play at Meadow Lane. Even as he gets older, Lee is still among the most intelligent and highly skilful players that you'll find in League One. Brought in at the height of 2009's sorry Munto Finance debacle, he's the focal point of the brand new Notts County.

4. Tommy Lawton (1947-51)
Tommy's image is one that's synonymous with our club's rich history - in fact, a photo of him leaping in the air currently adorns the Meadow Lane tunnel in near life-size form. Having paid a then British record transfer free of £17,500 for his services, Notts saw attendances rise greatly upon his arrival. He scored 103 goals in 166 games before returning as a manager and his most famous goal was a winner against our friends across the river at the City Ground, which further cements his place in this top five.

3. Tony Hateley (1958-62 & 1970-71)
Making his Notts debut at just 17 years of age, Tony sits second highest on the all-time goalscorers list - but in less than half as many appearances as the fellow at No1. With County currently in their 150th year, it was he who notched the Magpies' goal in our centenary celebrations against an England XI back in 1962. Not a bad list of achievements for a player who began his career as a centre-half!

2. Tom Keetley (1929-33)
Signed for a now quite remarkable £750, Keetley is a man who has gone down in history as one of the all-time greatest goalscorers at the club - certainly his goals-per-game ratio is unlikely to ever be matched. We're talking 97 goals in just 110 appearances here - smashing in a hat-trick on his debut was quite the ominous warning and to this day, his 39 goals in one season remains a club record.

1. Les Bradd (1967-78)
He might have taken longer to get there than the other three members of our 100-goals club, but his 137 goals is more than anyone else at the club has managed and rightly earns him the number one spot. He spent some of his Meadow Lane time alongside Tony Hateley, but it was under the guidance of our legendary manager Jimmy Sirrel where Les' best work came, as the club secured two promotions within a three-year period. The Bomber is currently back where he belongs, at Meadow Lane co-ordinating the club's 150th year celebrations.

And the worst…
Tony Hackworth (2001-04)
Currently turning out for Scarborough Athletic in the Northern Counties East Football League Premier Division, Hackworth's pitiful two goals in 62 appearances were far less than what was required from a player whose season prior to joining us saw him playing against Barcelona and Lazio in the Champions League. A £120,000 signing from Leeds United, Hackworth was graceful enough to agree to have his contract terminated a full year ahead of schedule. Top man!
