Doncaster Rovers

Doncaster Rovers

This season Prostate Cancer UK is the official charity of The Football League. To celebrate, we've asked bloggers from each of the 72 clubs to count down their top five strikers to have worn the No9 shirt, in recognition of the fact that prostate cancer affects one in nine men.

Here blogger Lewis Ward, of vikingsbloggen.wordpress.com, selects Doncaster's five best No9s… and one to forget!

5. Ian Duerden (1998-2001)
Duerden moved from Halifax to Doncaster in 1998, having made only one first-team appearance at the Shay. The striker managed an average of one goal every two games during his first 24 games, also scoring a double in the Endsleigh Cup final against Farnborough Town. Despite an impressive first season, injury made him miss much of the next and he eventually joined Kingstonian on loan later that year.

4. Paul Barnes (2001-03)
Barnes came to Doncaster as a relatively old footballer at 34, having already appeared for York, Huddersfield and Birmingham among others. The striker made 79 appearances for the Belle Vue side, notching 33 goals. Barnes played a big part in Rovers' promotion from the Conference via the play-offs in 2003 where he took the honour of captaining his side.

3. Laurie Sheffield (1965-66 & 1969-70)
The Swansea-born centre-forward joined Rovers from Newport County in 1965 for £8,000, and scored 34 goals in 58 appearances before leaving for Norwich in 1966. He rejoined Doncaster in 1969 and scored another six goals in 15 appearances. He formed a great partnership with Alick Jeffrey in the Rovers' front line. Sheffield has been involved with Rovers since his retirement, including presenting the Division Three championship trophy in 2004.

2. Tom Keetley (1923-29)
Tom Keetley made the short move to Rovers from Bradford Park Avenue in 1923. Keetley spent six seasons with Doncaster Rovers, appearing 231 times and scoring an outstanding 180 goals, which is the record for goals scored by any Doncaster player. He also holds the record for most goals scored by a Rovers player in one game, with six goals against Ashington in a 7-4 victory.

1. Clarrie Jordan (1940-48)
Clarrie Jordan joined Doncaster Rovers in April 1940 from Upton Colliery. Despite not making his debut until August 1946, Jordan became the league's top scorer that season with 42 goals in 41 appearances. The striker's presence inspired Rovers to their record-breaking promotion from Division Three North that season and Jordan still holds the record for most goals in one season at the club.

And the worst…
Guy Ipoua (2004-05)
Take a glance at Ipoua's CV and you would be forgiven for believing he was a fantastic footballer. That is what many Doncaster Rovers supporters would have thought when he signed in 2004. Ipoua had been on the books of Atlético Madrid and Sevilla among others before moving to England to appear for Scunthorpe and Gillingham. In nine appearances for Rovers, the Cameroonian managed no goals. In an attempt to get him scoring, he was sent to Mansfield and Lincoln City on loan, but scored no goals there either.
