Why do I need to raise a minimum of £1000 in sponsorship?

The basic cost of your trip is around £550. Prostate Cancer UK will pay for this out of the funds that you raise. Therefore the £1,000 fundraising target (in addition to the registration fee) ensures that at least 50% of donations come directly to Prostate Cancer UK to be spent on our services. We'll do everything we can to help you reach this target.

+

When do I have to pay my sponsorship in?

We ask for all sponsorship to be paid to Prostate Cancer UK six weeks after the event has taken place. However, we will require at least £400 of your sponsorship 8 weeks prior to the event before we confirm your travel arrangements. This, on top of the registration fee, will ensure we can cover your basic trip costs of £550.

The trip is operated by Discover Adventure Ltd, ATOL 5636, whose booking conditions apply.

Itinerary

Day 1: London Wembley Stadium - Harwich

An early start from the iconic Wembley Stadium allows us to avoid some of the morning traffic as we pass through north London. We will finally leave the bustle of the city behind us and cycle into Essex where we begin to get onto quieter roads. It is not long before we are among the fields and villages of rural Suffolk. The route is reasonably flat and will take us through quieter parts of the Suffolk countryside through Malden and then Colchester before heading to our destination Harwich where we catch the overnight ferry to the Hook of Holland. Night on ferry.

Cycle approx 85 miles

Day 2: Harwich - Amsterdam

We arrive into the Hook of Holland early in the morning and head towards Amsterdam. Our route takes us across the flat, cycle-friendly lands of Holland, hugging the sandy beaches and dunes of the coast. We pass the resort towns of Ter Heijde and Scheveningen, on the outskirts of The Hague, and head north through Katwijk aan Zee, an ancient town at the mouth of the River Rhine that was once the northern frontier of the Roman Empire.

We leave the coast at Zandvoort's long sandy beach and head east and inland, passing through Haarlem, which for centuries has been the 'tulip centre'. Not far from Amsterdam now, we ride past the waterways and parks of Europe's bike capital to our central finish point. We check into our hotel and have a well-earned shower and rest, before celebrating our achievement in this vibrant city. Night hotel.

(Breakfast on ferry not included)

Cycle approx 70 miles

Day 3: Amsterdam - London

The morning is free for sight-seeing and exploring Amsterdam, or simply relaxing in one of the city's many cafés. We then take an afternoon train back to London, connecting onto Eurostar in Brussels.

(Lunch and Dinner not included)

Fundraising tips

There are many ways you can achieve - and exceed - your £1,000 target. Here are just a few suggestions:

  • Get all of your friends together for a reunion and organise a football-themed quiz in your local pub, charge everyone an entry fee which you can add to your total.
  • Why not host a raffle on the same night? Ask people to bring a bottle that can go towards the prize draw, or ask stars in your club to give you a signed shirt to auction!
  • Ask your club to publicise your story in a match-day programme, on the club website or social media feeds. Include a link to your fundraising page and ask other fans to donate.
  • Ask the club players and manager to tweet their support.
  • Hold a car boot sale, you'll be surprised at how much you can raise from your unwanted items.
  • Ask your club's sponsors to donate generously, and give them a name-check in the local paper.

Accommodation

Accommodation is in shared cabins on the overnight ferry and on a twin-share basis in a 2/3 star Amsterdam hotel. The hotel is comfortable and well situated with en-suite facilities but not luxurious.

+

Food

All food is included when cycling. The food is great and there is plenty of it. Three meals as detailed in itinerary are not included.

Dietary Requirements

Being vegetarian or having other dietary requirements is not usually a problem provided you let us know well in advance. Please do not expect as much variety as you would have access to at home - If you know there are plenty of foods you cannot eat you may wish to bring extra snacks from home so you can top up your energy supply. Please feel free to ask us for advice.
