The longest day of the March from York to Leeds eventually took its toll, but the constant chirpiness of Chris 'Kammy' Kamara and the cheery support of Tadcaster's locals spurred our walkers on. From honorary sausages to Olympic VIPs, it was another memorable leg with lots of money raised.
From: York City FC To: Leeds United FC
Distance walked: 31 miles Total marchers: 65+
8:00am The day got off to a flyer at York City's Bootham Crescent ground, with a cheque for £3,000 presented by the club's chairman, Jason McGill. Thanks Minstermen! Sixteen members of RAF Leeming have joined our army for this leg to bring us some real military discipline. Attention!
8:30am Jeff's larger-than-life Soccer Saturday colleague, Chris Kamara, led the charge from the stadium onto the Ebor Way. You got the feeling he was going to make a big impression on Day 2 (we weren't wrong...).
11:50am Entering Tadcaster and local butcher's, GE Ward, stunned Jeff with a line of Men United sausages named in his honour. It would be unsporting to speculate why they'd been discounted from £2.99 to £1.50 per pound, though.
12:10pm Further down the high street, Geraldine from the local Sainsbury's donated £20 and handed out goodybags of fruit and biscuits to the grateful marchers.
12:30pm Then it was on to Tadcaster Albion for lunch, where Kammy made the fans Glad All Over with his snaking hips and fist pumping approach. Unbelievable!
12:45pm It was a bumper day for cheques, as the Albion also had one waiting for Jeff for £1,000! Before the marchers hit the trail to Leeds, there was just time for Ian Dowie to bang in a penalty against the club mascot. The Taddy Bear was left stranded in no man's land.
6:30pm We stopped in at the offices of SkyBet in central Leeds and - wouldn't you know? - there was another glorious cheque waiting for Jeff and his footsoldiers for a magnificent £5,000. If that wasn't enough, Leeds Rhinos and England rugby league legend Kevin Sinfield and Rio Olympian Tom Bosworth joined us here for the final two miles to Elland Road.
7:45pm It was dark and late by the time we reached Elland Road and many of us were feeling emotional as were greeted by friends and family. The longest day of the March at 31 miles had taken it's toll on all of us and many amongst the ranks struggled to finish. Jeff hugged Russ Green supportively at the end and even Kammy, who had been running and joking throughout, was tired and mooted. Let nobody underestimate the size of the task ahead.
Overheard on the hoof: "Today's been about mind over body." (RAF Leeming)
Celebs spotted: Chris Kamara, Ian Dowie, Russ Green, David Prutton, Kevin Sinfield, Tom Bosworth, Charlie Nicholas, Ray Wilkins, Bill Arthur.
Marcher of the day: Peter Miller. "I consider myself lucky to have had bladder cancer otherwise my prostate cancer would have gone undiagnosed."
Please donate to Jeff's gargantuan fundraising effort and help us smash our £200k target.
